Yaz, manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., is an oral contraceptive that was first approved by the FDA in March 2006 to prevent unwanted pregnancy. In October 2006, approval was expanded to include treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). In January 2007, it was approved to treat moderate acne in women who also wish to use birth control.
Yaz is known as a combined oral contraceptive, which means that it contains both estrogen and progestin. The progestin in Yaz, drospirenone, can increase blood potassium levels, a condition known as hyperkalemia, which can result in heart problems and other side effects among women with pre-existing kidney, liver and adrenal disease.

The FDA stated that, "The overall effect of the distracting visuals, graphics, concurrent supers and background music is to undermine the communication of important risk information, minimizing these risks and misleadingly suggesting that YAZ is safer than has been demonstrated by substantial evidence or substantial clinical experience. "
