Raptiva, manufactured by Genentech, was approved to treat psoriasis, a skin disease that attacks the immune system.

In 2008, the FDA requested an updated warning on the Raptiva label to warn patients about the risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare, serious, progressive neurologic disease caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system, resulting in neurological decline and death. In 2009, the FDA issued a public health advisory, stating, "Patients using Raptiva should be aware that Raptiva increases the risk of developing PML. PML is a disease that is fatal or causes severe disability."

In April, 2009, Genentech announced a voluntary recall of Raptiva.
