Profile

Dr. Flancbaum is Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of Bariatric Services at North Shore University Hospital at Glen Cove (NSUH-GC) and a nationally recognized authority in general surgery, bariatric surgery and surgical critical care.  
 
Prior to joining NSUH-GC, Dr Flancbaum served as Director of Bariatric Surgery at St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York, NY, Chief of Trauma, Critical care and Nutrition Support at The Ohio State University Hospitals in Columbus, OH, where he established the bariatric surgery program, and Director of Surgical Critical Care at UMDNJ-.Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York-Downstate Medical Center and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois in Chicago as well as a fellowship in Traumatology and Critical Care at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems in Baltimore, MD. Dr Flancbaum is board certified in General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care and Nutrition Support, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians and over 25 professional societies. He has had faculty appointments at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Ohio State and Columbia University. He has authored 2 books, including The Doctor’s Guide to Weight Loss Surgery: How to make the Decision That Could Save Your Life (Bantam Press, 2003), a book on weight loss surgery for lay people as well as over 120 peer-reviewed papers.
