Gadolinium Attorneys
Gadolinium, manufactured by multiple drug companies, is a contrasting agent used in MRI or MRA scans to enable doctors to distinguish between a patient's blood vessels and surrounding tissues and organs.
While gadolinium helps physicians to better detect potential problems, the FDA is currently investigating potential links between its use and a serious condition known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) among patients with pre-existing kidney problems. The FDA has requested the manufacturers of all five gadolinium contrast agents (Magnevist, MultiHance, Omniscan, OptiMARK and ProHance) to add a new boxed warning and a new Warnings section to their labels.
Nephrogrenic systemic fibrosis is a progressive disorder that causes thickening and scarring of the skin and connective tissues, impacting joint movements and other functions, and the disease can be fatal. According to the FDA, the link between gadolinium-based contrast agents and NSF has been detected only among people who are already suffering from severe kidney insufficiency or dysfunction.
If you have recently undergone an MRI or MRA with a gadolinium contrast agent, the following symptoms should be immediately reported to your doctor:
- Swelling, hardening and tightening of your skin
- Reddened or darkened patches on the skin
- Burning or itching of your skin
- Yellow raised spots on the whites of your eyes
- Stiffness in your joints; problems moving or straightening arms, hands, legs, or feet
- Pain deep in your hip bones or ribs
- Muscle weakness
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with NSF after undergoing an MRI or MRA study using a gadolinium-based contrast agent, you need qualified legal counsel from a firm familiar with pharmaceutical litigation.
