Avandia Attorneys
Avandia, produced by GlaxoSmithKline, is a medication that increases the body's sensitivity to insulin and is used to help Type-2 diabetics control their blood sugar levels.
However, despite its effectiveness in helping patients to manage diabetes, Avandia has also been linked to dangerous side effects, including heart attack and cardiovascular disease.
In July 2010, an FDA advisory panel reviewed data regarding the drug's safety. While members of the panel voted that there are "significant safety concerns" regarding the risk of chest pain and heart attack, a recall has not been issued at this time. In November 2008, the Archives of Internal Medicine published a study that found an increased risk for heart failure and death among patients taking Avandia compared to patients taking another Type-2 diabetes medication. The FDA originally requested a black-box warning on Avandia in 2007, when research showed an increased risk for a heart attack.
Symptoms of heart failure, heart attack, and other related side effects should be brought to the attention of your doctor immediately, and may include the following:
- Chest pain
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Sudden, severe headaches
- Limb numbness
- Shortness of breath
- Swollen hands, ankles or feet
- Sudden inexplicable weight gain
- Vomiting
